Agua Inc ABIS Wastewater Treatment

For nearly a decade, the Agua Inc team has implemented ABIS (Aquatic Biological Integrated System) Wastewater Systems (WWTS) for for hundreds of clients around the world. ABIS systems offer a more cost effective, higher performing, and more sustainable method of wastewater treatment than other systems like activated sludge or lagoons. Systems are customized based on influent flow, the level and type of contamination, and effluent requirement. They can be used on a variety of types of wastewater ranging from urban municipal wastewater to agricultural wastewater. In general, the systems cost on average 30-70% less to build and maintain than alternative systems, don’t produce sludge, use little to no energy, and are simple and inexpensive to maintain. They also sequester CO2 rather than emit it. Additionally, because they are beautiful and odorless, their installation usually encounters less community resistance and they can be placed closer to communities reducing sewer connection costs.

A response to conventional challenges

Water and wastewater treatment systems installed during previous decades, have been infamously plagued by energy inefficiency, high chemical consumption, and intensive operations making them a burden for many small communities. The average US municipality’s water and wastewater treatment facility consume over 30% of total municipal electricity, demand thousands of dollars in toxic chemicals, high technical expertise and expensive maintenance. With increasing effluent standards and energy prices, there has never been a better time to upgrade to a more affordable, more sustainable and more energy efficient way of treatment.

How Floating Green Filters Work

Agua Inc has developed the innovative ABIS (Aquatic Biological Integrated Systems) water treatment method. Particularly effective for medium to large scale water treatment systems. It uses a combination of specialized plants (PhytoTech), hardware (BioHardware), and filter materials (BioFilters) to naturally and effectively treat water for a variety of  scales and applications (wastewater treatment and recycling, drinking water purification, etc). The system is based on similar principals to conventional biological water treatment. In conventional systems oxygen is commonly used to promote healthy aerobic bacterial communities that break down contaminants, this is usually achieved with large, energy intensive aeration machines. In the Agua system, these expensive aeration machines are replaced by uniquely developed aerating aquatic plants, that inject high levels of oxygen through their roots, meanwhile absorbing nutrient contaminants and heavy metals, and creating highly effective biofilms on their dense root structures (learn more aboutPhyoTech).

These plants are put in floating by specially designed flotation hardware like the Agua BioMatrix. This hardware aids the plants to float on the surface of the water being treated and thus aids in the development high surface areas of contact between aerating roots and the contaminated water. Finally, many systems combine this with a pre-treatment or post-treatment filter, which polishes the water by further removing contaminants (find out more about BioFilters). These filters are made of unique engineered materials, like Electrochar, and can be used both in combination with plant based systems or as stand alone filters. Together these technologies, form integral parts of Agua’s unique ABIS water treatment method.

How it compares

Agua Inc’s ABIS floating green filters offer a wide range of advantages over wastewater treatment solution conventional technology solutions. Meanwhile, floating green filters combine of leading conventional technology to offer a efficient and effective wastewater treatment system.
