AGUA’s water treatment systems are based on plant based biotechnology which is chemical free and treats water to EU required quality (PH, BOD, etc). Contaminated water is directed to specially breed macrophyte plants that are planted in floating support in treatment ponds. This creates an enhanced micro-environment of pathogen digesting bacteria among the suspended plant roots, which remove contaminants. After passing through several levels of treatment and a final sand filter, the water reaches its peak natural purity, In cases where the water is at a lower elevation, solar panels are used to pump the clean water to the local community. After completion the system requires very simple on going maintenance, including annually cutting and caring for the floating macrophytex plants to maximize efficiency.

ABIS can also be effectively utilized for drinking water purification. The ABIS system removes heavy metals, contaminants, and pathogens from a contaminated water source, like a river, lake or ground water, by passing it through the ABIS lagoons and then through an additional Electrochar or another disinfection process like a cathodic-protection sand filter to ensure the highest quality water. In total the system costs a fraction of other similarly functioning technologies, uses little energy, and requires limited technical expertise. This is a particularly popular technology in places where an electricity connection or energy is expensive, available operational budgets are low, and technical expertise is limited.

For nearly a decade, the Agua Inc team has implemented ABIS Wastewater Systems (WWTS) for for hundreds of clients around the world. ABIS systems offer a more cost effective, higher performing, and more sustainable method of wastewater treatment than other systems like activated sludge or lagoons. Systems are customized based on influent flow, the level and type of contamination, and effluent requirement. They can be used on a variety of types of wastewater ranging from urban municipal wastewater to agricultural wastewater. In general, the systems cost on average 30-70% less to build and maintain than alternative systems, don’t produce sludge, use little to no energy, and are simple and inexpensive to maintain. They also sequester CO2 rather than emit it. Additionally, because they are beautiful and odorless, their installation usually encounters less community resistance and they can be placed closer to communities reducing sewer connection costs.

Different from other types of wastewater treatment technologies, ABIS can be directly installed into existing infrastructure, including: activation sludge bioreactors, lagoons, clarifiers and more. In doing so, ABIS can not only improve treatment performance and significantly improve effluent quality, but also dramatically save energy by on average between 10-30% for facilities with aeration tanks, leading to a pay period for the installation often only between 2-5 years. The ABIS upgrades also reduce odors and increase overall aesthetics.
